The eighth annual Citizens Bank Pell Bridge Run will be held on Sunday, October 21, 2018 at 7:00 a.m.
The Citizens Bank Pell Bridge Run is a 4 mile run/walk produced by the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority. This event is not-for-profit and 100% of proceeds will go to support local not-for-profits.
This event is the most unique road race experience in the northeast! Once a year pedestrians are allowed to run or walk across the Claiborne Pell Bridge from Jamestown to Newport, R.I.
The primary goals of the Citizens Bank Pell Bridge Run are to fundraise for local not-for-profit organizations and to promote a healthy/active lifestyle.
When: The race will be held on October 21, 2018 at 7:00 a.m.
Where: Race starts in Jamestown and ends in Downtown Newport.
Who: Open to runners or walkers. Must be able to do three miles in an hour pace.
Onsite registration and Packet Pick-up will be held on October 19-21 at the Newport Visitors Center.
October 19 - Newport Visitors Center, Newport, R.I. 4 p.m. - 7 p.m.
October 20 - Newport Visitors Center , Newport, R.I. 12 p.m. - 5 p.m.
October 21 - Newport Visitors Center, Newport, R.I. 5:30 a.m. - 6:30 a.m. (just bib pickup, no onsite registration)
Runners can pick up their bib and timing chip on race morning at the race start/shuttle area, however, it is strongly recommended that all runners attend Friday or Saturday registration to alleviate race morning delays.
There will be no on-site registration on race morning.
Parking: There is NO PARKING at the race start in Jamestown. All athletes must use the shuttles from Newport or be dropped off at the designated athlete drop off locations. Parking Locations Map.
Free parking will be available at the Newport Visitors Center until 9:30 AM. Space is limited in this lot so we encourage you to consider all parking options throughout Newport, but please be aware that parking meters and major lots are still charging at this time of year.
Shuttles: Shuttles will run from the Newport Visitors Center in downtown Newport to the race starting line in Jamestown beginning at 5:30 a.m.
Drop Off Location: Athletes wishing to be dropped off near the starting line coming from Newport will take the East Shore Rd exit just after the toll plaza and head north on East Shore Road until they arrive at the designated drop off location. Drop-Off Locations Map.
Athletes coming from the West Bay will take the first exit in Jamestown and follow signage to the designated drop-off location. NO PEDESTRIANS ARE ALLOWED TO EXIT THEIR VEHICLES ON Route 138.
Due to the large participant field, there will be multiple wave starts of roughly 200 - 300 participants in each wave. The first wave starts at 7:00 AM, then sequentially minutes apart, one after the other after that. Runners and walkers will be asked to organize by pace time with elite runners going off first and walkers going last. We ask all participants to align themselves by the appropriate pace so we can ensure a smooth race. There will be volunteers and members of the race staff assisting with the pacing process.
Please Stay in the designated pedestrian lane. Do not delay while on the bridge.
Rhode Island State Police will escort traffic over the Pell Bridge during the race in the East bound lanes while runners/walkers will only have the right hand lane on the bridge to run/walk. It is critical to the success of the event and for the safety of all participants that you remain in the designated pedestrian throughout the race. This lane will be designated by cones in the roadway.
We also ask that all participants please resist delaying at the top of the Bridge to take photographs. We have hired additional photographers that will be stationed on the Bridge to take pictures of participants, which will be available for free download in the weeks following the event. Please enjoy the views, but keep moving.
Due to the early start time and race distance, there will be no free gear drop off at the start or finish before the race. Dress appropriately for the cold and wind. It is required that athletes wishing to shed layers do so before they get on the bridge. Do not leave any items on the bridge. All clothing collected will be donated to charity.
The top male and female finisher along with the top three age group award winners will be recognized at the post race festival. More Info.
Water, hot chocolate and coffee will be offered at the starting line in Jamestown. We will host one on-course water stop at the base of the Pell Bridge in Newport.
Water will be available at the finish from Polar Seltzer. KIND Snacks, will also be at the finish with samples of their latest tasty products. In addition, the Brick Alley Pub will be hosting their "Post Pell Party" starting at 8 AM, with a hot breakfast buffet and other options.
Due to the unique nature of the race course and the time of the year, there is a potential for race cancelation due to the weather. Please dress appropriately for potential wind and cold temperatures. Unfortunately there is no rain date and no refunds will be permitted. Please review our cancelation policy.
